Canada's First Student-Run All-Female Hackathon

Our Mission/

The role of the hackathon: ElleHacks is a women-only* hackathon taking place in the Lassonde School of Engineering, North York. It is organized by students with background in STEM fields. We welcome women of all experience levels from a variety of technical and creative disciplines to participate in a collaborative, technical project in an inclusive and safe space.

ElleHacks' secondary goals include:

  • Provide women who are new to software development a welcoming environment in which they can get their hackathon feet wet, understand that it isn’t a scary place, and that, yes, they DO have the skills that are useful and necessary to participate in these types of events.

  • Allow experienced women developers a chance to mentor up-and-coming developers.

  • Have project groups walk away from the event with a working prototype for their portfolio, confidence in themselves, and the desire to participate in future hackathons.

  • Added Bonus: Groups continue working together to expand their working prototypes.

ElleHacks acknowledges the complicated nature of the word “women,” knowing it may not work for many, and can feel unwelcoming or alienating for some. We recognize the imperfection of language, and we use * to specifically and intentionally include cis women, trans, non-binary, agender, intersex, and queer people.

FAQ/

  • Women are underrepresented in the tech world, but it’s up to us women to change that! We are creating a welcoming environment to show that there is a place in tech for every lady out there while building cool projects and sharing stories at ElleHacks.

  • Students of all skill levels are encouraged to attend, even if you’ve never written a line of code. We’re prepared to teach you everything you need to learn right here while also supporting the most experienced hackers.

  • Please register to be a volunteer here, we'd love to have you! Volunteers can be any gender, and are critical to ensure that ElleHacks operates smoothly. This year, we expect around 200 hackers, so we need all the help that we can get!

  • ElleHacks 2018 will be held in the Bergeron School of Engineering Excellence at York University from February 2th-4th, 2018.

  • Anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary may register as a hacker! All ages are welcome. Additionally, all participants must follow the MLH Code of Conduct.

  • Please register to be a mentor here, we'd love to have you! Mentors can be any gender, and make the hackathon experience impactful by guiding participants through technical challenges and sharing stories along the way.

  • You can work on a team or work solo. Teams can be constructed prior to arrival with friends, or can be formed during the time allocated for team formation before the official hacking begins. Team size must not exceed four members, according to MLH rules.

  • You must bring a valid student or government issued ID card for admission. Bring your laptop, charging cables, and a sleeping bag/pillow if that makes you more comfortable for the night. We also recommend bringing toiletries and a change of clothes. Everything else will be provided!

  • Unfortunately, this year we will not be providing travel reimbursements. We do offer transportation to various universities around Ontario.

  • There is no registration fee.

  • Jan 22 is the last day to register.

  • Under MLH code, participants are required to be students (highschool, university or college student) with at most 1.5 years grace period off school.

  • Its a 32 hour event. We will be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, and lots of snacks (all free)! We will have designated area for sleeping purposes, which students will bring their own sleeping bags to sleep. For hygienic purposes, we have included gifts in your tote bag and we also have a shower available if needed! (bring your toothbrush!)
